The quasi-episodic structure (they’re not really chapters) gives the plot a disjointed, stop-start feel and uniquely (for the Discworld at least) the book ends on a massive and unsatisfying cliffhanger. There’s very little of the careful plotting that’s a feature of his writing, none of the rage against prejudice and unfairness that powers some of his other books, and very little of the depths and contradictions that make his characters so engaging. I all honesty though, I do agree, The Colour of Magic is not the best Discworld novel and, perhaps more tellingly, simply doesn’t feel like the other books. Well screw you! I started with The Colour of Magic, twice now, and it hasn’t done me any harm. You, if you’re a Discworld fan, almost certainly agree. Even Neil Gaiman described it as “a terrible place to start”. Probably the single most common piece of advice given about the Discworld books is “Don’t start with The Colour of Magic”.
